Synovial chondromatosis of the TMJ: MR and CT findings.

چکیده
Synovial chondromatosis is a rare , benign joint disorder characterized by metaplasia of the synovium with the formation of numerous foci of cellular hyaline cartilage. These foci may detach from the synovium and become loose bodies within the joint space, and also may calcify. The disease is usually monoarticular, of unknown origin, and occurs most often in larger joints, such as the knee, shoulder, and hip [1 , 2] . Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), first described by Axhausen in 1933 [3], is truly rare , with only 41 cases reported in the literature [3-7]. This article presents another case, and emphasizes MR and CT findings.

OBJECTIVES Our aim was to study the clinical and radiologic findings of synovial chondromatosis (SC) affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and provide references for diagnosis and treatment. STUDY DESIGN Twenty patients confirmed as SC histopathologically were included in the investigation. Nineteen cases were treated with arthrotomy and 1 case with arthroscopy. The clinical manifestati...

Radiographies revealed characteristic findings of SC including multiple calcified multifaceted loose bodies within both knees. Removal of cartilaginous segments as well as total synovectomy was performed...

Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a cartilaginous metaplasy of the mesenchymal remnants of the synovial tissue of the joints. It is characterized by the formation of cartilaginous nodules in the synovium and inside the articular space (loose bodies). SC mainly affects to big synovial joints such as the knee and the elbow, being uncommon the onset within the TMJ, where 75 cases have been published...
